Narrated Anas: On the day of Badr, the Prophet said, Who will go and see what has happened to Abu Jahl? Ibn Mas`ud went and found that the two sons of 'Afra had struck him fatally. `Abdullah bin Mas`ud got hold of his beard and said, 'Are you Abu Jahl? He replied, Can there be a man more superior to one whom his own folk have killed (or you have killed)?
حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ : مَنْ يَنْظُرُ مَا فَعَلَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ , فَانْطَلَقَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فَوَجَدَهُ قَدْ ضَرَبَهُ ابْنَا عَفْرَاءَ حَتَّى بَرَدَ , فَأَخَذَ بِلِحْيَتِهِ ، فَقَالَ : أَنْتَ أَبَا جَهْلٍ ، قَالَ : وَهَلْ فَوْقَ رَجُلٍ قَتَلَهُ قَوْمُهُ ؟ أَوْ قَالَ : قَتَلْتُمُوهُ . حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ نَحْوَهُ .
مجھ سے محمد بن مثنیٰ نے بیان کیا، ہم سے ابن ابی عدی نے بیان کیا، ان سے سلیمان تیمی نے اور ان سے انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ   نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بدر کی لڑائی کے دن فرمایا ”کون دیکھ کر آئے گا کہ ابوجہل کا کیا ہوا؟“ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ معلوم کرنے گئے تو دیکھا کے عفراء کے دونوں لڑکوں نے اسے قتل کر دیا تھا اور اس کا جسم ٹھنڈا پڑا ہے۔ انہوں نے اس کی ڈاڑھی پکڑ کر کہا، تو ہی ابوجہل ہے؟ اس نے کہا، کیا اس سے بھی بڑا کوئی آدمی ہے جسے آج اس کی قوم نے قتل کر ڈالا ہے یا ( اس نے یوں کہا کہ ) تم لوگوں نے اسے قتل کر ڈالا ہے؟ مجھ سے ابن مثنیٰ نے بیان کیا، ہم کو معاذ بن معاذ نے خبر دی، کہا ہم سے سلیمان نے بیان کیا اور انہیں انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ نے خبر دی، اسی طرح آگے حدیث بیان کی۔

Qais bin Ubad also said, The following Verse was revealed in their connection:-- These two opponents believers and disbelievers) Dispute with each other About their Lord. (22.19) Qais said that they were those who fought on the day of Badr, namely, Hamza, `Ali, 'Ubaida or Abu 'Ubaida bin Al-Harith, Shaiba bin Rabi`a, `Utba and Al-Wahd bin `Utba.
