Narrated 'Alqama: While I was walking with `Abdullah he said, We were in the company of the Prophet and he said, 'He who can afford to marry should marry, because it will help him refrain from looking at other women, and save his private parts from committing illegal sexual relation; and he who cannot afford to marry is advised to fast, as fasting will diminish his sexual power.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَا أَنَا أَمْشِي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ ، فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ .
ہم سے عبدان نے بیان کیا، ان سے ابوحمزہ نے، ان سے اعمش نے، ان سے ابراہیم نے ان سے علقمہ نے بیان کیا کہ میں عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ جا رہا تھا۔ آپ نے کہا کہ   ہم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ تھے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا اگر کوئی صاحب طاقت ہو تو اسے نکاح کر لینا چاہئے کیونکہ نظر کو نیچی رکھنے اور شرمگاہ کو بدفعلی سے محفوظ رکھنے کا یہ ذریعہ ہے اور کسی میں نکاح کرنے کی طاقت نہ ہو تو اسے روزے رکھنے چاہئیں کیونکہ وہ اس کی شہوت کو ختم کر دیتا ہے۔

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: Allah's Apostle mentioned Ramadan and said, Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadan), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'ban as 30 days).
