Narrated Anas: When Abu Bakr; sent me to (collect the Zakat from) Bahrain, he wrote to me the following:-- (In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful). These are the orders for compulsory charity (Zakat) which Allah's Apostle had made obligatory for every Muslim, and which Allah had ordered His Apostle to observe: Whoever amongst the Muslims is asked to pay Zakat accordingly, he should pay it (to the Zakat collector) and whoever is asked more than that (what is specified in this script) he should not pay it; for twenty-four camels or less, sheep are to be paid as Zakat; for every five camels one sheep is to be paid, and if there are between twenty-five to thirty-five camels, one Bint Makhad is to be paid; and if they are between thirty-six to forty-five (camels), one Bint Labun is to be paid; and if they are between forty-six to sixty (camels), one Hiqqa is to be paid; and if the number is between sixty-one to seventy-five (camels), one Jadha is to be paid; and if the number is between seventy-six to ninety (camels), two Bint Labuns are to be paid; and if they are from ninety-one to one-hundredand twenty (camels), two Hiqqas are to be paid; and if they are over one-hundred and-twenty (camels), for every forty (over one-hundred-and-twenty) one Bint Labun is to be paid, and for every fifty camels (over one-hundred-and-twenty) one Hiqqa is to be paid; and who ever has got only four camels, has to pay nothing as Zakat, but if the owner of these four camels wants to give something, he can. If the number of camels increases to five, the owner has to pay one sheep as Zakat. As regards the Zakat for the (flock) of sheep; if they are between forty and one-hundred-and-twenty sheep, one sheep is to be paid; and if they are between one-hundred-and-twenty to two hundred (sheep), two sheep are to be paid; and if they are between two-hundred to three-hundred (sheep), three sheep are to be paid; and for over three-hundred sheep, for every extra hundred sheep, one sheep is to be paid as Zakat. And if somebody has got less than forty sheep, no Zakat is required, but if he wants to give, he can. For silver the Zakat is one-fortieth of the lot (i.e. 2.5%), and if its value is less than two-hundred Dirhams, Zakat is not required, but if the owner wants to pay he can.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى الْأَنْصَارِيُّ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي ثُمَامَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، أَنَّ أَنَسًا حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كَتَبَ لَهُ هَذَا الْكِتَابَ لَمَّا وَجَّهَهُ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ هَذِهِ فَرِيضَةُ الصَّدَقَةِ الَّتِي فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالَّتِي أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا رَسُولَهُ ، فَمَنْ سُئِلَهَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى وَجْهِهَا فَلْيُعْطِهَا ، وَمَنْ سُئِلَ فَوْقَهَا فَلَا يُعْطِ فِي أَرْبَعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَمَا دُونَهَا مِنَ الْغَنَمِ مِنْ كُلِّ خَمْسٍ شَاةٌ إِذَا بَلَغَتْ خَمْسًا وَعِشْرِينَ إِلَى خَمْسٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ فَفِيهَا بِنْتُ مَخَاضٍ أُنْثَى فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ سِتًّا وَثَلَاثِينَ إِلَى خَمْسٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ فَفِيهَا بِنْتُ لَبُونٍ أُنْثَى ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ سِتًّا وَأَرْبَعِينَ إِلَى سِتِّينَ فَفِيهَا حِقَّةٌ طَرُوقَةُ الْجَمَلِ ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ وَاحِدَةً وَسِتِّينَ إِلَى خَمْسٍ وَسَبْعِينَ فَفِيهَا جَذَعَةٌ ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ يَعْنِي سِتًّا وَسَبْعِينَ إِلَى تِسْعِينَ فَفِيهَا بِنْتَا لَبُونٍ ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ إِحْدَى وَتِسْعِينَ إِلَى عِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ فَفِيهَا حِقَّتَانِ طَرُوقَتَا الْجَمَلِ ، فَإِذَا زَادَتْ عَلَى عِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ فَفِي كُلِّ أَرْبَعِينَ بِنْتُ لَبُونٍ وَفِي كُلِّ خَمْسِينَ حِقَّةٌ ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَعَهُ إِلَّا أَرْبَعٌ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَلَيْسَ فِيهَا صَدَقَةٌ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ رَبُّهَا ، فَإِذَا بَلَغَتْ خَمْسًا مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَفِيهَا شَاةٌ وَفِي صَدَقَةِ الْغَنَمِ فِي سَائِمَتِهَا إِذَا كَانَتْ أَرْبَعِينَ إِلَى عِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ شَاةٌ ، فَإِذَا زَادَتْ عَلَى عِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ إِلَى مِائَتَيْنِ شَاتَانِ ، فَإِذَا زَادَتْ عَلَى مِائَتَيْنِ إِلَى ثَلَاثِ مِائَةٍ فَفِيهَا ثَلَاثُ شِيَاهٍ ، فَإِذَا زَادَتْ عَلَى ثَلَاثِ مِائَةٍ فَفِي كُلِّ مِائَةٍ شَاةٌ ، فَإِذَا كَانَتْ سَائِمَةُ الرَّجُلِ نَاقِصَةً مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ شَاةً وَاحِدَةً فَلَيْسَ فِيهَا صَدَقَةٌ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ رَبُّهَا وَفِي الرِّقَّةِ رُبْعُ الْعُشْرِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ إِلَّا تِسْعِينَ وَمِائَةً فَلَيْسَ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ رَبُّهَا .

ہم سے محمد بن عبداللہ بن مثنیٰ انصاری نے بیان کیا ‘ انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ سے میرے والد نے بیان کیا ‘ انہوں نے کہا کہ مجھ ثمامہ بن عبداللہ بن انس نے بیان کیا ‘ ان سے انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے جب انہیں بحرین ( کا حاکم بنا کر ) بھیجا تو ان کو یہ پروانہ لکھ دیا۔ شروع اللہ کے نام سے جو بڑا مہربان نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہے۔ یہ زکوٰۃ کا وہ فریضہ ہے جسے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مسلمانوں کے لیے فرض قرار دیا ہے اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس کا حکم دیا۔ اس لیے جو شخص مسلمانوں سے اس پروانہ کے مطابق زکوٰۃ مانگے تو مسلمانوں کو اسے دے دینا چاہیے اور اگر کوئی اس سے زیادہ مانگے تو ہرگز نہ دے۔ چوبیس یا اس سے کم اونٹوں میں ہر پانچ اونٹ پر ایک بکری دینی ہو گی۔ ( پانچ سے کم میں کچھ نہیں ) لیکن جب اونٹوں کی تعداد پچیس تک پہنچ جائے تو پچیس سے پینتیس تک ایک ایک برس کی اونٹنی واجب ہو گی جو مادہ ہوتی ہے۔ جب اونٹ کی تعداد چھتیس تک پہنچ جائے ( تو چھتیس سے ) پینتالیس تک دو برس کی مادہ واجب ہو گی۔ جب تعداد چھیالیس تک پہنچ جائے ( تو چھیالیس سے ) ساٹھ تک میں تین برس کی اونٹنی واجب ہو گی جو جفتی کے قابل ہوتی ہے۔ جب تعداد اکسٹھ تک پہنچ جائے ( تو اکسٹھ سے ) پچھتر تک چار برس کی مادہ واجب ہو گی۔ جب تعداد چھہتر تک پہنچ جائے ( تو چھہتر سے ) نوے تک دو دو برس کی دو اونٹنیاں واجب ہوں گی۔ جب تعداد اکیانوے تک پہنچ جائے تو ( اکیانوے سے ) ایک سو بیس تک تین تین برس کی دو اونٹنیاں واجب ہوں گی جو جفتی کے قابل ہوں۔ پھر ایک سو بیس سے بھی تعداد آگے بڑھ جائے تو ہر چالیس پر دو برس کی اونٹنی واجب ہو گی اور ہر پچاس پر ایک تین برس کی۔ اور اگر کسی کے پاس چار اونٹ سے زیادہ نہیں تو اس پر زکوٰۃ واجب نہ ہو گی مگر جب ان کا مالک اپنی خوشی سے کچھ دے اور ان بکریوں کی زکوٰۃ جو ( سال کے اکثر حصے جنگل یا میدان وغیرہ میں ) چر کر گزارتی ہیں اگر ان کی تعداد چالیس تک پہنچ گئی ہو تو ( چالیس سے ) ایک سو بیس تک ایک بکری واجب ہو گی اور جب ایک سو بیس سے تعداد بڑھ جائے ( تو ایک سو بیس سے ) سے دو سو تک دو بکریاں واجب ہوں گی۔ اگر دو سو سے بھی تعداد بڑھ جائے تو ( تو دو سو سے ) تین سو تک تین بکریاں واجب ہوں گی اور جب تین سو سے بھی تعداد آگے نکل جائے تو اب ہر ایک سو پر ایک بکری واجب ہو گی۔ اگر کسی شخص کی چرنے والی بکریاں چالیس سے ایک بھی کم ہوں تو ان پر زکوٰۃ واجب نہیں ہو گی مگر اپنی خوشی سے مالک کچھ دینا چاہے تو دے سکتا ہے۔ اور چاندی میں زکوٰۃ چالیسواں حصہ واجب ہو گی لیکن اگر کسی کے پاس ایک سو نوے ( درہم ) سے زیادہ نہیں ہیں تو اس پر زکوٰۃ واجب نہیں ہو گی مگر خوشی سے کچھ اگر مالک دینا چاہیے تو اور بات ہے۔

Narrated Anas: Abu Bakr wrote to me what Allah had ordered His Apostle (about Zakat) which goes: Neither an old nor a defected animal, nor a male-goat may be taken as Zakat except if the Zakat collector wishes (to take it).

Narrated Abu Huraira: Abu Bakr said, By Allah! If they (pay me the Zakat and) withhold even a she-kid which they used to pay during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle, I will fight with them for it.

Umar said, It was nothing but Allah Who opened Abu Bakr's chest towards the decision to fight, and I came to know that his decision was right.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: When Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) sent Mu`adh to Yemen, he said (to him), YOU are going to people of a (Divine) Book. First of all invite them to worship Allah (alone) and when they come to know Allah, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, five prayers in every day and night; and if they start offering these prayers, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them, the Zakat. And it is to be taken from the rich amongst them and given to the poor amongst them; and if they obey you in that, take Zakat from them and avoid (don't take) the best property of the people as Zakat.

Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Allah's Apostle said, No Zakat is imposed on less than five Awsuq of dates; no Zakat is imposed on less than five Awaq of silver, and no Zakat is imposed on less than five camels.

Narrated Abu Dhar: Once I went to him (the Prophet ) and he said, By Allah in Whose Hands my life is (or probably said, 'By Allah, except Whom none has the right to be worshipped) whoever had camels or cows or sheep and did not pay their Zakat, those animals will be brought on the Day of Resurrection far bigger and fatter than before and they will tread him under their hooves, and will butt him with their horns, and (those animals will come in circle): When the last does its turn, the first will start again, and this punishment will go on till Allah has finished the judgments amongst the people.
