Narrated `Adi bin Hatim: While I was sitting with Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) two person came to him; one of them complained about his poverty and the other complained about the prevalence of robberies. Allah's Apostle said, As regards stealing and robberies, there will shortly come a time when a caravan will go to Mecca (from Medina) without any guard. And regarding poverty, The Hour (Day of Judgment) will not be established till one of you wanders about with his object of charity and will not find anybody to accept it And (no doubt) each one of you will stand in front of Allah and there will be neither a curtain nor an interpreter between him and Allah, and Allah will ask him, 'Did not I give you wealth?' He will reply in the affirmative. Allah will further ask, 'Didn't send a messenger to you?' And again that person will reply in the affirmative Then he will look to his right and he will see nothing but Hell-fire, and then he will look to his left and will see nothing but Hell-fire. And so, any (each one) of you should save himself from the fire even by giving half of a date-fruit (in charity). And if you do not find a hall datefruit, then (you can do it through saying) a good pleasant word (to your brethren). (See Hadith No. 793 Vol. 4).

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ النَّبِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُجَاهِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحِلُّ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ الطَّائِيُّ ، قَالَ :سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , يَقُولُ : كُنْتُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَاءَهُ رَجُلَانِ أَحَدُهُمَا يَشْكُو الْعَيْلَةَ وَالْآخَرُ يَشْكُو قَطْعَ السَّبِيلِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَمَّا قَطْعُ السَّبِيلِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَأْتِي عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ الْعِيرُ إِلَى مَكَّةَ بِغَيْرِ خَفِيرٍ ، وَأَمَّا الْعَيْلَةُ فَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا تَقُومُ حَتَّى يَطُوفَ أَحَدُكُمْ بِصَدَقَتِهِ لَا يَجِدُ مَنْ يَقْبَلُهَا مِنْهُ ، ثُمَّ لَيَقِفَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُ حِجَابٌ وَلَا تَرْجُمَانٌ يُتَرْجِمُ لَهُ ، ثُمَّ لَيَقُولَنَّ لَهُ أَلَمْ أُوتِكَ مَالًا فَلَيَقُولَنَّ بَلَى ، ثُمَّ لَيَقُولَنَّ أَلَمْ أُرْسِلْ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولًا فَلَيَقُولَنَّ بَلَى ، فَيَنْظُرُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ فَلَا يَرَى إِلَّا النَّارَ ، ثُمَّ يَنْظُرُ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ فَلَا يَرَى إِلَّا النَّارَ ، فَلْيَتَّقِيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ .

ہم سے عبداللہ بن محمد مسندی نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ ہم سے ابوعاصم نبیل نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ ہمیں سعدان بن بشیر نے خبر دی ‘ کہا کہ ہم سے ابومجاہد سعد طائی نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ ہم سے محل بن خلیفہ طائی نے بیان کیا ‘ کہا کہ میں نے عدی بن حاتم طائی رضی اللہ عنہ سے سنا ‘ انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں موجود تھا کہ دو شخص آئے ‘ ایک فقر و فاقہ کی شکایت لیے ہوئے تھا اور دوسرے کو راستوں کے غیر محفوظ ہونے کی شکایت تھی۔ اس پر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ جہاں تک راستوں کے غیر محفوظ ہونے کا تعلق ہے تو بہت جلد ایسا زمانہ آنے والا ہے کہ جب ایک قافلہ مکہ سے کسی محافظ کے بغیر نکلے گا۔ ( اور اسے راستے میں کوئی خطرہ نہ ہو گا ) اور رہا فقر و فاقہ تو قیامت اس وقت تک نہیں آئے گی جب تک ( مال و دولت کی کثرت کی وجہ سے یہ حال نہ ہو جائے کہ ) ایک شخص اپنا صدقہ لے کر تلاش کرے لیکن کوئی اسے لینے والا نہ ملے۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ کے درمیان کوئی پردہ نہ ہو گا اور نہ ترجمانی کے لیے کوئی ترجمان ہو گا۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ اس سے پوچھے گا کہ کیا میں نے تجھے دنیا میں مال نہیں دیا تھا؟ وہ کہے گا کہ ہاں دیا تھا۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ پوچھے گا کہ کیا میں نے تیرے پاس پیغمبر نہیں بھیجا تھا؟ وہ کہے گا کہ ہاں بھیجا تھا۔ پھر وہ شخص اپنے دائیں طرف دیکھے گا تو آگ کے سوا اور کچھ نظر نہیں آئے گا پھر بائیں طرف دیکھے گا اور ادھر بھی آگ ہی آگ ہو گی۔ پس تمہیں جہنم سے ڈرنا چاہیے خواہ ایک کھجور کے ٹکڑے ہی ( کا صدقہ کر کے اس سے اپنا بچاؤ کر سکو ) اگر یہ بھی میسر نہ آ سکے تو اچھی بات ہی منہ سے نکالے۔

Narrated Abu Musa: Thy Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, A time will come upon the people when a person will wander about with gold as Zakat and will not find anybody to accept it, and one man will be seen followed by forty women to be their guardian because of scarcity of men and great number of women.

Narrated Abu Mas`ud: When the verses of charity were revealed, we used to work as porters. A man came and distributed objects of charity in abundance. And they (the people) said, He is showing off. And another man came and gave a Sa (a small measure of food grains); they said, Allah is not in need of this small amount of charity. And then the Divine Inspiration came: Those who criticize such of the believers who give in charity voluntarily and those who could not find to give in charity except what is available to them. (9.79).

Narrated Abu Mas`ud Al-Ansari: Whenever Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) ordered us to give in charity, we used to go to the market and work as porters and get a Mudd (a special measure of grain) and then give it in charity. (Those were the days of poverty) and today some of us have one hundred thousand.

Narrated `Adi bin Hatim heard the Prophet saying: Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.

Narrated Aisha: A lady along with her two daughters came to me asking (for some alms), but she found nothing with me except one date which I gave to her and she divided it between her two daughters, and did not eat anything herself, and then she got up and went away. Then the Prophet came in and I informed him about this story. He said, Whoever is put to trial by these daughters and he treats them generously (with benevolence) then these daughters will act as a shield for him from Hell-Fire. (See Hadith No. 24, Vol. 8).

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to the Prophet and asked, O Allah's Apostle! Which charity is the most superior in reward? He replied, The charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy. Do not delay it to the time of approaching death and then say, 'Give so much to such and such, and so much to such and such.' And it has already belonged to such and such (as it is too late).
