Narrated Ibn `Umar: When `Abdullah bin Ubai (the chief of hypocrites) died, his son came to the Prophet and said, O Allah's Apostle! Please give me your shirt to shroud him in it, offer his funeral prayer and ask for Allah's forgiveness for him. So Allah's Apostle (p.b.u.h) gave his shirt to him and said, Inform me (When the funeral is ready) so that I may offer the funeral prayer. So, he informed him and when the Prophet intended to offer the funeral prayer, `Umar took hold of his hand and said, Has Allah not forbidden you to offer the funeral prayer for the hypocrites? The Prophet said, I have been given the choice for Allah says: '(It does not avail) Whether you (O Muhammad) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites), or do not ask for forgiveness for them. Even though you ask for their forgiveness seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. (9.80) So the Prophet offered the funeral prayer and on that the revelation came: And never (O Muhammad) pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (i.e. hypocrites) that dies. (9. 84)

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي نَافِعٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ أُبَيٍّ لَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ جَاءَ ابْنُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعْطِنِي قَمِيصَكَ أُكَفِّنْهُ فِيهِ وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ ، فَأَعْطَاهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَمِيصَهُ , فَقَالَ : آذِنِّي أُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ فَآذَنَهُ ، فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ جَذَبَهُ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ , فَقَالَ : أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ نَهَاكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى الْمُنَافِقِينَ ، فَقَالَ : أَنَا بَيْنَ خِيَرَتَيْنِ ، قَالَ الله تعالى : اسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ أَوْ لا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ إِنْ تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً فَلَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ سورة التوبة آية 80 , فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ , فَنَزَلَتْ : وَلا تُصَلِّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ مَاتَ أَبَدًا سورة التوبة آية 84 .

ہم سے مسدد نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے یحییٰ بن سعید قطان نے بیان کیا، ان سے عبیداللہ عمری نے کہا کہ مجھ سے نافع نے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے بیان کیا کہ جب عبداللہ بن ابی ( منافق ) کی موت ہوئی تو اس کا بیٹا ( عبداللہ صحابی ) نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں آیا اور عرض کی کہ یا رسول اللہ! والد کے کفن کے لیے آپ اپنی قمیص عنایت فرمائیے اور ان پر نماز پڑھئے اور مغفرت کی دعا کیجئے۔ چنانچہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنی قمیص ( غایت مروت کی وجہ سے ) عنایت کی اور فرمایا کہ مجھے بتانا میں نماز جنازہ پڑھوں گا۔ عبداللہ نے اطلاع بھجوائی۔ جب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نماز پڑھانے کے لیے آگے بڑھے تو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو پیچھے سے پکڑ لیا اور عرض کیا کہ کیا اللہ تعالیٰ نے آپ کو منافقین کی نماز جنازہ پڑھنے سے منع نہیں کیا ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ مجھے اختیار دیا گیا ہے جیسا کہ ارشاد باری ہے ”تو ان کے لیے استغفار کر یا نہ کر اور اگر تو ستر مرتبہ بھی استغفار کرے تو بھی اللہ انہیں ہرگز معاف نہیں کرے گا“ چنانچہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے نماز پڑھائی۔ اس کے بعد یہ آیت اتری ”کسی بھی منافق کی موت پر اس کی نماز جنازہ کبھی نہ پڑھانا“۔

Narrated Jabir: The Prophet came to (the grave of) `Abdullah bin Ubai after his body was buried. The body was brought out and then the Prophet put his saliva over the body and clothed it in his shirt.

Narrated Sa`d from his father: Once the meal of `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf was brought in front of him, and he said, Mustab bin `Umar was martyred and he was better than I, and he had nothing except his Burd (a black square narrow dress) to be shrouded in. Hamza or another person was martyred and he was also better than I and he had nothing to be shrouded in except his Burd. No doubt, I fear that the rewards of my deeds might have been given early in this world. Then he started weeping.

Narrated Ibrahim: Once a meal was brought to `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf and he was fasting. He said, Mustab bin `Umar was martyred and he was better than I and was shrouded in his Burd and when his head was covered with it, his legs became bare, and when his legs were covered his head got uncovered. Hamza was martyred and was better than I. Now the worldly wealth have been bestowed upon us (or said a similar thing). No doubt, I fear that the rewards of my deeds might have been given earlier in this world. Then he started weeping and left his food.
