Salim said, Ibn `Umar delayed the Maghrib prayer because at that time he heard the news of the death of his wife Safiya bint Abi `Ubaid. I said to him, 'The prayer (is due).' He said, 'Go on.' Again I said, 'The prayer (is due).' He said, 'Go on,' till we covered two or three miles. Then he got down, prayed and said, 'I saw the Prophet praying in this way, whenever he was in a hurry during the journey.' `Abdullah (bin `Umar) added, Whenever the Prophet was in a hurry, he used to delay the Maghrib prayer and then offer three rak`at (of the Maghrib) and perform Taslim, and after waiting for a short while, Iqama used to be pronounced for the `Isha' prayer when he would offer two rak`at and perform Taslim. He would never offer any optional prayer till the middle of the night (when he used to pray the Tahajjud).

وَزَادَ اللَّيْثُ قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يُونُسُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، قَالَ سَالِمٌ : كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا يَجْمَعُ بَيْنَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِالْمُزْدَلِفَةِ ، قَال سَالِمٌ : وَأَخَّرَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ الْمَغْرِبَ وَكَانَ اسْتُصْرِخَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ أَبِي عُبَيْدٍ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ : الصَّلَاةَ ، فَقَالَ : سِرْ ، فَقُلْتُ : الصَّلَاةَ ، فَقَالَ : سِرْ ، حَتَّى سَارَ مِيلَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةً ، ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : هَكَذَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي إِذَا أَعْجَلَهُ السَّيْرُ ، وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ: رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَعْجَلَهُ السَّيْرُ يُؤَخِّرُ الْمَغْرِبَ فَيُصَلِّيهَا ثَلَاثًا ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ ، ثُمَّ قَلَّمَا يَلْبَثُ حَتَّى يُقِيمَ الْعِشَاءَ فَيُصَلِّيهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُسَلِّمُ ، وَلَا يُسَبِّحُ بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ حَتَّى يَقُومَ مِنْ جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ .

لیث بن سعد نے اس روایت میں اتنا زیادہ کیا کہ مجھ سے یونس نے ابن شہاب سے بیان کیا، کہ سالم نے بیان کیا کہ ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما مزدلفہ میں مغرب اور عشاء ایک ساتھ جمع کر کے پڑھتے تھے۔ سالم نے کہا کہ ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے مغرب کی نماز اس دن دیر میں پڑھی تھی جب انہیں ان کی بیوی صفیہ بنت ابی عبید کی سخت بیماری کی اطلاع ملی تھی ( چلتے ہوئے ) میں نے کہا کہ نماز! ( یعنی وقت ختم ہوا چاہتا ہے ) لیکن آپ نے فرمایا کہ چلے چلو پھر دوبارہ میں نے کہا کہ نماز! آپ نے پھر فرمایا کہ چلے چلو اس طرح جب ہم دو یا تین میل نکل گئے تو آپ اترے اور نماز پڑھی پھر فرمایا کہ میں نے خود دیکھا ہے کہ جب نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سفر میں تیزی کے ساتھ چلنا چاہتے تو اسی طرح کرتے تھے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے یہ بھی فرمایا کہ میں نے خود دیکھا کہ جب نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ( منزل مقصود تک ) جلدی پہنچنا چاہتے تو پہلے مغرب کی تکبیر کہلواتے اور آپ اس کی تین رکعت پڑھا کر سلام پھیرتے۔ پھر تھوڑی دیر ٹھہر کر عشاء پڑھاتے اور اس کی دو ہی رکعت پر سلام پھیرتے۔ عشاء کے فرض کے بعد آپ سنتیں وغیرہ نہیں پڑھتے تھے آدھی رات کے بعد کھڑے ہو کر نماز پڑھتے۔

Narrated `Abdullah bin 'Amir from his father who said: I saw the Prophet (p.b.u.h) offering the prayer on his mount (Rahila) whatever direction it took.

Narrated Salim: At night `Abdullah bin `Umar used to offer the prayer on the back of his animal during the journey and never cared about the direction he faced. Ibn `Umar said, Allah's Apostle used to offer the optional prayer on the back of his Mount facing any direction and also used to pray the witr on it but never offered the compulsory prayer on it.
