Abdullah bin Amr narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: The most virtuous fast is the fast of my brother Dawud. He would fast a day, and not fast (the next) day. He would not flee at the time of engagement (with the enemy).
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، عَنْ مِسْعَرٍ، وَسُفْيَانَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ أَفْضَلُ الصَّوْمِ صَوْمُ أَخِي دَاوُدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا وَلَا يَفِرُّ إِذَا لَاقَى . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ هُوَ الشَّاعِرُ الْمَكِّيُّ الْأَعْمَى وَاسْمُهُ السَّائِبُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ:‏‏‏‏ أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ أَنْ تَصُومَ يَوْمًا وَتُفْطِرَ يَوْمًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُقَالُ:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا هُوَ أَشَدُّ الصِّيَامِ.
عبداللہ بن عمرو بن العاص رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”سب سے افضل روزہ میرے بھائی داود علیہ السلام کا روزہ ہے، وہ ایک دن روزہ رکھتے تھے اور ایک دن بغیر روزہ کے رہتے، اور جب ( دشمن سے ) مڈبھیڑ ہوتی تو میدان چھوڑ کر بھاگتے نہیں تھے“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- بعض اہل علم کہتے ہیں کہ سب سے افضل روزہ یہ ہے کہ تم ایک دن روزہ رکھو اور ایک دن بغیر روزہ کے رہو، کہا جاتا ہے کہ یہ سب سے سخت روزہ ہے۔

Abu Ubaid, the freed slave of Abdur-Rahman bin Awf narrated: I witnessed Umar bin Al-Khattab on the Day of Nahr beginning with the Salat before the Khutbah. Then he said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah prohibit fasting on these two days. As for the Day of Fitr, then it is for you to take a break from your fasting, and a celebration for the Muslims. As for the Day of Adha, then eat from the flesh that you have sacrificed.'
