Ibn Abi Najib narrated from his father who said: Ibn Umar was asked about fasting (the Day of) Arafah (at Arafat). He said: 'I performed Hajj with the Prophet, and he did not fast it, and with Abu Bakr, and he did not fast it, and with Umar, and he did not fast it, and with Uthman, and he did not fast it. I do no fast it, nor order it nor forbid it.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، وَإِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سُئِلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ بِعَرَفَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَجَجْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يَصُمْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَعَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ فَلَمْ يَصُمْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَعَ عُمَرَ فَلَمْ يَصُمْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَعَ عُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ يَصُمْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَا لَا أَصُومُهُ وَلَا آمُرُ بِهِ وَلَا أَنْهَى عَنْهُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ رُوِيَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ أَيْضًا عَنْ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ رَجُلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبُو نَجِيحٍ اسْمُهُ يَسَارٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ سَمِعَ مِنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ.
ابونجیح یسار کہتے ہیں کہ   ابن عمر رضی الله عنہما سے عرفہ کے دن عرفات میں روزہ رکھنے کے بارے میں پوچھا گیا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ حج کیا۔ آپ نے اس دن کا روزہ نہیں رکھا۔ ابوبکر کے ساتھ حج کیا، انہوں نے بھی نہیں رکھا، عمر کے ساتھ کیا۔ انہوں نے بھی نہیں رکھا۔ عثمان کے ساتھ کیا تو انہوں نے بھی نہیں رکھا ( رضی الله عنہم ) ، میں بھی اس دن ( وہاں عرفات میں ) روزہ نہیں رکھتا ہوں، البتہ نہ تو میں اس کا حکم دیتا ہوں اور نہ ہی اس سے روکتا ہوں۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث حسن ہے، ۲- یہ حدیث ابن ابی نجیح سے بطریق: «عن أبيه عن رجل عن ابن عمر» بھی مروی ہے۔ ابونجیح کا نام یسار ہے اور انہوں نے ابن عمر سے سنا ہے۔

Abu Qatadah narrated that : the Prophet said: Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins of) the year before it.

Aishah narrated: Ashura was a day that the Quraish used to fast during Jahiliyyah, and the Messenger of Allah used to fast it. But when (the fast of) Ramadan became obligatory, the Ramadan was the required and Ashura was left. So whoever wanted to, he fasted it, and whoever wanted to, he left it.

Al-Hakam bin Al-Arfaj said: I met up with Ibn Abbas while he was reclining on his Rida at the Zamzam (well). So I said: 'Inform me about the Day of Ashura. On which day is it fasted?' He said: 'When you see the crescent of Al-Muharram, then count, then fast on the morning of the ninth day.' He said: 'I said: Is this how Muhammad fasted it?' He said: 'Yes.'

Not even Jihad in Allah Cause? The Messenger of Allah said: Not even Jihad in Allah's Cause, unless a man were to out with his self and his wealth and not return from that with anything.
