Aishah narrated: The Prophet (S) stood (in prayer) with an Ayah from the Qur'an at night

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْعَبْدِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُتَوَكِّلِ النَّاجِيِّ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِآيَةٍ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ لَيْلَةً . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ مِنْ هَذَا الْوَجْهِ.

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی الله عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ایک رات قرآن کی صرف ایک ہی آیت کھڑے پڑھتے رہے ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث اس سند سے حسن غریب ہے۔

Abdullah bin Abi Qais narrated: I asked Aishah how the recitation of the Prophet (S) was at night. [Would he recite silently o audibly?] So she said: 'He would do both of those. Sometimes he was silent with his recitation and sometimes it was audible.' So I said: 'All praise is due to Allah, the One who made the matter broad.'

Zaid bin Thabit narrated that: The Prophet (S) said: The most virtuous prayer of yours is in your homes, except for the obligatory.

Kharijab bin Hudhafah narrated: Allah's Messenger came out to us and he said: 'Indeed Allah has assisted you with a Salat that is better for you than red camels: Al-Witr which Allah made for you between the Isha prayer till Al-Fajr has begun.

Ali said: Al-Witr is not incumbent like your obligatory prayers, but it is a Sunnah of Allah's Messenger who said: Indeed Allah is Witr (One), and He loves Al-Witr, so perform Al-Witr O people of the Qur'an.

Sufyan Ath-Thawri and others reported from Abu Ishaq, from Asim bin Damrah, that : Ali said: Al-Witr is not incumbent like the status of the obligatory prayers, but it is a Sunnah which Allah's Messenger practiced.
