Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid: We came to Hudhaifah and said: 'Inform us of the closest to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in guidance and conduct, so that we may take from him and hear from him.' He said: 'The closest of the people in guidance, conduct, and character used to be 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, until he would hide from us in his house. And the guarded ones (guarded by Allah from straying in word and deed) from the Companions of Muhammad (ﷺ) know that Ibn Umm 'Abd (a nickname for 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud) is from among the most intimately close to Allah of them.'

حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَيْنَا عَلَى حُذَيْفَةَ، فَقُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدِّثْنَا مَنْ أَقْرَبُ النَّاسِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَدْيًا وَدَلًّا فَنَأْخُذَ عَنْهُ وَنَسْمَعَ مِنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ أَقْرَبُ النَّاسِ هَدْيًا،‏‏‏‏ وَدَلًّا،‏‏‏‏ وَسَمْتًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ حَتَّى يَتَوَارَى مِنَّا فِي بَيْتِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَ الْمَحْفُوظُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ هُوَ مِنْ أَقْرَبِهِمْ إِلَى اللَّهِ زُلْفَى ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

عبدالرحمٰن بن یزید کہتے ہیں کہ ہم حذیفہ رضی الله عنہ کے پاس آئے تو ہم نے ان سے کہا: آپ ہمیں بتائیے کہ لوگوں میں چال ڈھال میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سب سے قریب کون ہے کہ ہم اس کے طور طریقے کو اپنائیں، اور اس کی باتیں سنیں؟ تو انہوں نے کہا کہ لوگوں میں چال ڈھال اور طور طریقے میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سب سے قریب ابن مسعود رضی الله عنہ ہیں، یہاں تک کہ وہ ہم سے اوجھل ہو کر آپ کے گھر کے اندر بھی جایا کرتے تھے، اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اصحاب کو جو کسی طرح کی تحریف یا نسیان سے محفوظ ہیں یہ بخوبی معلوم ہے کہ ام عبد کے بیٹے یعنی عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ ان سب میں اللہ سے سب سے نزدیک ہیں۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے۔

Narrated Khaithamah bin Abi Sabrah: I came to Al-Madinah, so I asked Allah to make it easy for me to sit with one who is righteous. He made Abu Hurairah accessible to me, so I sat with him and said to him: 'Indeed, I asked Allah to make it easy for me to sit with who is righteous, and it is to you that I was guided.' So he said to me: 'From where are you?' I said: 'From the people of Al-Kufah, I came to search out good and to seek it.' So he said: 'Is there not among you Sa'd bin Malik whose supplication is answered, Ibn Mas'ud, the one who used to carry the water for purification and the sandals of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and Hudhaifah, the keeper of the secrets of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and 'Ammar whom Allah has guarded from Shaitan upon the tongue of His Prophet, and Salman the companion of the Two Books?'

Narrated Hudhaifah: that they said: O Messenger of Allah, if you were to appoint someone as a successor. He said: If I were to appoint a successor over you, and you were to disobey him, you would be punished. But whatever Hudhaifah narrates to you, then believe him, and whatever 'Abdullah teaches you to recite, then recite it.

Narrated Zaid bin Aslam: from his father, from 'Umar, that he ('Umar) granted a stipend of three-thousand and five-hundred to Usamah bin Zaid, and he granted three-thousand to 'Abdullah bin 'Umar. So 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said to his father: Why have you given preference to Usamah over me? For by Allah, he has not preceded me to any battle. He said: Because Zaid used to be more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than your father, and Usamah was more beloved to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than you. So I gave preference to the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) over my beloved.
