Narrated 'Amr bin Shurahbil [Abu Maisarah]: from 'Umar bin Al-Khattab, that he said: O Allah! Make the verdict concerning Khamr sufficiently clear for us! So (the Ayah) in Al-Baqarah was revealed: They ask you concerning Khamr and gambling. Say: In them is a great sin (2:219). So 'Umar was called, and it was recited to him, so he said: O Allah! Make the verdict concerning Khamr sufficiently clear for us! So (the Ayah) in An-Nisa was revealed: 'O you who believe! Approach not As-Salat while you are in a drunken state (4:43).' So 'Umar was called and it was recited him, so he said O Allah! Make the verdict concerning Khamr sufficiently clear for us! So (the Ayah) in Al-Ma'idah was revealed: Shaitan only wants to excite enmity and hatred between you with Khamr and gambling...' up to His saying: 'So will you not then abstain (5:91).' So 'Umar was called and it was recited to him, so he said: 'We abstained, we abstained.'
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْرَائِيلُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاق، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ أَبِي مَيْسَرَةَ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَزَلَتِ الَّتِي فِي الْبَقَرَةِ يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ سورة البقرة آية 219، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنْ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَزَلَتِ الَّتِي فِي النِّسَاءِ يَأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى سورة النساء آية 43 فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ بَيِّنَ لَنَا فِي الْخَمْرِ بَيَانَ شِفَاءٍ فَنَزَلَتِ الَّتِي فِي الْمَائِدَةِ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ سورة المائدة آية 91 فَدُعِيَ عُمَرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُرِئَتْ عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ انْتَهَيْنَا انْتَهَيْنَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ مُرْسَلٌ.
عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   انہوں نے دعا کی اے اللہ شراب کے بارے میں ہمارے لیے تسلی بخش صاف صاف حکم بیان فرما، تو سورۃ البقرہ کی پوری آیت «يسألونك عن الخمر والميسر» ۱؎ نازل ہوئی۔ ( جب یہ آیت نازل ہو چکی ) تو عمر رضی الله عنہ بلائے گئے اور انہیں یہ آیت پڑھ کر سنائی گئی۔ ( یہ آیت سن کر ) عمر رضی الله عنہ نے پھر کہا: اے اللہ! ہمارے لیے شراب کا واضح حکم بیان فرمایا: تو سورۃ نساء کی آیت «يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تقربوا الصلاة وأنتم سكارى» ۲؎ نازل ہوئی، عمر رضی الله عنہ پھر بلائے گئے اور انہیں یہ آیت بھی پڑھ کر سنائی گئی، انہوں نے پھر کہا: اے اللہ! ہمارے لیے شراب کا حکم صاف صاف بیان فرما دے۔ تو سورۃ المائدہ کی آیت «إنما يريد الشيطان أن يوقع بينكم العداوة والبغضاء في الخمر والميسر» سے «فهل أنتم منتهون» ۳؎ تک نازل ہوئی، عمر رضی الله عنہ پھر بلائے گئے اور آیت پڑھ کر انہیں سنائی گئی، تو انہوں نے کہا: ہم باز رہے ہم باز رہے۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث اسرائیل سے مرسل طریقہ سے آئی ہے۔

Narrated Al-Bara: A man among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) died before Khamr had been made unlawful. So when Khamr was made unlawful, some men said: 'How about our companions who died while drinking Khamr?' So (the following) was revealed: Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what the ate, if they have Taqwa and perform good (5:93).

Narrated Al-Bara bin 'Azib: Some people among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) died while they had been drinking Khamr. So when it was revealed that it was unlawful, some people among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'How about our companions who died while they were drinking it?' So (the following) Ayah was revealed: Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what they ate (5:93).

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: They (the Companions) said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how do you hold those who died while they were drinking Khamr - considering that the prohibition of intoxicants is now revealed?' So, (the following) Ayah was revealed: Those who believe and do righteous good deeds, there is no sin on them for what they ate (in the past), if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous good deeds.

Narrated 'Ikrimah: from Ibn 'Abbas: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! When I consume meat and I get around women, my desires get the best of me. So I made meat unlawful for myself.' So Allah revealed: O you who believe! Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful to you, and transgress not. Verily Allah does not like the transgressors. And eat of the things which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good (5:87-88).

Narrated Abu Al-Bukhtari: from 'Ali who said: When (the following) was revealed: And Hajj to the House is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, for those who are able to undertake the journey (3:97). They said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Every year?' But he was silent. So they said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Every year?' He said: 'No. If I were to say yes, then it would be required.' And Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, revealed O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble (5:101).
