Narrated Az-Zuhri: that 'Urqah said: I said to 'Aishah: 'I do not see anything wrong if someone does not go between As-Safa and Al-Marwah, nor any harm if I do not go between them.' She said: 'How horrible is what you have said O my nephew! The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would go between them, and the Muslims go between them. It was only that the people who assumed Ihram in the name of the false deity Mannah, which was in Al-Mushallal, would not go between As-Safa and Al-Marwah. So, Allah Blessed and Most High revealed: So it is not a sin for those who perform Hajj or go 'Umrah to the House to go between them (2:158). And if it were as you say, then it would be: Then there is no harm on him if he does not go between them. Az-Zuhri said: I mentioned that to Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Harith bin Hisham. He was surprised at that and he said: 'Indeed this is knowledge. I had heard some men among the people of knowledge saying that those Arabs who would not go between As-Safa and Al-Marwah said, that going between these two rocks is a matter from Jahiliyyah. And others among the Ansar said: We have only been ordered with going around the House, we were not ordered to do so with As-Safa and Al-Marwah. So Allah Most High revealed: Indeed As-Safa and Al-Marwah are of the symbols of Allah...' (2.158) Abu Bakr bin 'Abdur-Rahman said: 'So I thought that it was revealed about these people, and those people.'

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَال:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ الزُّهْرِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُ لِعَائِشَةَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا أَرَى عَلَى أَحَدٍ لَمْ يَطُفْ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَا أُبَالِي أَنْ لَا أَطُوفَ بَيْنَهُمَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ بِئْسَمَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْتَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا ابْنَ أُخْتِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏طَافَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَطَافَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنَّمَا كَانَ مَنْ أَهَلَّ لِمَنَاةَ الطَّاغِيَةِ الَّتِي بِالْمُشَلَّلِ لَا يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى:‏‏‏‏ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا سورة البقرة آية 158 وَلَوْ كَانَتْ كَمَا تَقُولُ لَكَانَتْ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ لَا يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ:‏‏‏‏ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِأَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَعْجَبَهُ ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا لَعِلْمٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رِجَالًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُونَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا كَانَ مَنْ لَا يَطُوفُ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُونَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ طَوَافَنَا بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْحَجَرَيْنِ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ آخَرُونَ:‏‏‏‏ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ إِنَّمَا أُمِرْنَا بِالطَّوَافِ بِالْبَيْتِ وَلَمْ نُؤْمَرْ بِهِ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ سورة البقرة آية 158، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ فَأُرَاهَا قَدْ نَزَلَتْ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ وَهَؤُلَاءِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

عروہ بن زبیر رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی الله عنہا سے کہا: میں اس میں کوئی حرج نہیں سمجھتا کہ کوئی شخص صفا و مروہ کے درمیان طواف نہ کرے، اور میں خود اپنے لیے ان کے درمیان طواف نہ کرنے میں کوئی حرج نہیں پاتا۔ تو عائشہ نے کہا: اے میرے بھانجے! تم نے بری بات کہہ دی۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے طواف کیا اور مسلمانوں نے بھی کیا ہے۔ ہاں ایسا زمانہ جاہلیت میں تھا کہ جو لوگ مناۃ ( بت ) کے نام پر جو مشلل ۱؎ میں تھا احرام باندھتے تھے وہ صفا و مروہ کے درمیان طواف نہیں کرتے تھے، تو اللہ تبارک وتعالیٰ نے یہ آیت: «فمن حج البيت أو اعتمر فلا جناح عليه أن يطوف بهما» ۲؎ نازل فرمائی۔ اگر بات اس طرح ہوتی جس طرح تم کہہ رہے ہو تو آیت اس طرح ہوتی «فلا جناح عليه أن لا يطوف بهما» ( یعنی اس پر صفا و مروہ کے درمیان طواف نہ کرنے میں کوئی حرج نہیں ہے ) ۔ زہری کہتے ہیں: میں نے اس بات کا ذکر ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن بن حارث بن ہشام سے کیا تو انہیں یہ بات بڑی پسند آئی۔ کہا: یہ ہے علم و دانائی کی بات۔ اور ( بھئی ) میں نے تو کئی اہل علم کو کہتے سنا ہے کہ جو عرب صفا و مروہ کے درمیان طواف نہ کرتے تھے وہ کہتے تھے کہ ہمارا طواف ان دونوں پتھروں کے درمیان جاہلیت کے کاموں میں سے ہے۔ اور کچھ دوسرے انصاری لوگوں نے کہا: ہمیں تو خانہ کعبہ کے طواف کا حکم ملا ہے نہ کہ صفا و مروہ کے درمیان طواف کا۔ ( اسی موقع پر ) اللہ تعالیٰ نے آیت: «إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله» نازل فرمائی ۳؎۔ ابوبکر بن عبدالرحمٰن کہتے ہیں: میں سمجھتا ہوں کہ یہ آیت انہیں لوگوں کے بارے میں نازل ہوئی ہے۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے۔

Narrated 'Asim Al-Ahwal: I asked Anas bin Malik about As-Safa and Al-Marwah, and he said: 'They were among the rites of Jahiliyyah.' He said: 'So during Islam, we refrained from them, then Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: Indeed As-Safa and Al-Marwah are of the symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin for those who perform Hajj or 'Umrah to the house to go between them. (2:158)' He said: 'So it is voluntarily then verily, Allah is the All-Recogniser, the All-Knowing. (2:158)'

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) arrived in Makkah, performing Tawaf around the House seven times, I heard him reciting: And take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer (2:125). So he performed Salat behind the Maqam, then he came to the (Black) Stone, then he said: 'We begin with what Allah began with.' So he began at As-Safa and recited: Indeed As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the Symbols of Allah (2:158).

Narrated Al-Bara bin 'Azib: It was the custom among the Companions of Muhammad (ﷺ), that if any of them was fasting and the food was presented but he had slept before eating, he would not eat that night, nor the following day until the evening. Qais bin Sirmah Al-Ansari fasted and came to his wife at the time of Iftar, and said to her: 'No, but I will go and bring something for you.' He worked during the day, so his eyes (sleep) overcame him. Then his wife came, and when she saw him she said: 'You shall be disappointed.' About the middle of the next day he fainted. That was mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ), so this Ayah was revealed: 'It is made lawful for you to have sexual relations with your women on the night of the fasts. So they were very happy about that. 'And eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night). (2:187)'

Narrated An-Nu'man bin Bashir: from the Prophet (ﷺ) regarding Allah's saying: Your Lord said: Invoke Me, I shall respond to you (40:60, it appears that the author intended to apply it to Al-Baqarah 2:186). - he said: The supplication is the worship. And he recited: 'Your Lord said: Invoke Me, I shall respond to you.' up to His saying: 'in humiliation.'

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: When 'Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)' was revealed, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: 'That only refers to the whiteness of the day from the blackness of the night.'

Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim: I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the fast, he said: 'Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)' - he said: So I took two ropes, one white and the other black to look at them. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me - it was something that Sufyan (a sub narrator) did not remember - so he said: It is only the night and the day.
