Urwah bin Az-Zubair and Ibn Musayyab narrated that Hakim bin Hizam said: I (once) asked the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) (for something) and he gave it to me. Then I asked him (again) and he gave it to me. Then I asked him (again) and he gave it to me. Then I asked him (again), so he gave it to me. Then he said: 'O Hakim! Indeed this wealth is green and sweet, so whoever takes it without asking for it, he will be blessed in it. And whoever takes it, insisting upon it, he will not be blessed in it. He is like the one who eats but does not get satisfied and contended. And the upper hand (giving) is better than the lower hand (receiving). So Hakim said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! By the One who sent you with the Truth! I shall not ask anyone for anything after you until I depart the world.' So Abu Bakr used to call Hakim to give him something, but he refused to accept it. Then 'Umar called him to give to him, but he refused to accept it. So 'Umar said: O you Muslims! I would like you to bear witness that I presented Hakim with his due of these spoils of war but he refused to accept it. So Hakim never asked anyone of the people for anything after the Messenger of Allah, until he died.

حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، وَابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، أَنَّ حَكِيمَ بْنَ حِزَامٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَعْطَانِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَعْطَانِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا حَكِيمُ،‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ هَذَا الْمَالَ خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ فَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِسَخَاوَةِ نَفْسٍ بُورِكَ لَهُ فِيهِ وَمَنْ أَخَذَهُ بِإِشْرَافِ نَفْسٍ لَمْ يُبَارَكْ لَهُ فِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ كَالَّذِي يَأْكُلُ وَلَا يَشْبَعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ حَكِيمٌ:‏‏‏‏ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ لَا أَرْزَأُ أَحَدًا بَعْدَكَ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُفَارِقَ الدُّنْيَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَكَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَدْعُو حَكِيمًا إِلَى الْعَطَاءِ فَيَأْبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَرَ دَعَاهُ لِيُعْطِيَهُ فَأَبَى أَنْ يَقْبَلَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكُمْ يَا مَعْشَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى حَكِيمٍ أَنِّي أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِ حَقَّهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْفَيْءِ فَيَأْبَ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ يَرْزَأْ حَكِيمٌ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ شَيْئًا بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ.

حکیم بن حزام رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے مانگا تو آپ نے مجھے دیا، پھر مانگا تو پھر دیا، پھر مانگا تو پھر دیا، پھر آپ نے فرمایا: ”حکیم! بیشک یہ مال ہرا بھرا میٹھا ہے، جو اسے خوش دلی سے لے لے گا تو اسے اس میں برکت نصیب ہو گی، اور جو اسے حریص بن کر لے گا اسے اس میں برکت حاصل نہ ہو گی، اور اس کی مثال ایسے ہی ہے جو کھاتا ہے لیکن آسودہ نہیں ہوتا، اور اوپر کا ہاتھ ( دینے والا ) نیچے کے ہاتھ ( لینے والے ) سے بہتر ہے“، حکیم کہتے ہیں: میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! قسم ہے اس ذات کی جس نے آپ کو حق کے ساتھ بھیجا ہے! آپ کے بعد میں کسی سے کچھ نہ لوں گا یہاں تک کہ دنیا سے رخصت ہو جاؤں، پھر ابوبکر رضی الله عنہ، حکیم رضی الله عنہ کو کچھ دینے کے لیے بلاتے تو وہ اسے قبول کرنے سے انکار کر دیتے، ان کے بعد عمر رضی الله عنہ نے بھی انہیں کچھ دینے کے لیے بلایا تو اسے بھی قبول کرنے سے انکار کر دیا، چنانچہ عمر رضی الله عنہ نے کہا: اے مسلمانوں کی جماعت! میں تم لوگوں کو حکیم پر گواہ بناتا ہوں کہ اس مال غنیمت میں سے میں ان کا حق پیش کرتا ہوں تو وہ اسے لینے سے انکار کرتے ہیں، چنانچہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے بعد حکیم رضی الله عنہ نے کسی شخص کے مال سے کچھ نہیں لیا یہاں تک کہ وہ دنیا سے رخصت ہو گئے ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث صحیح ہے۔

Abdur-Rahman bin 'Awf said: We were tested along with the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) by adversity, so we were patient, then we were tested after him with prosperity, but we were not patient.

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: Whoever makes the Hereafter his goal, Allah makes his heart rich, and organizes his affairs, and the world comes to him whether it want to or not. And whoever makes the world his goal, Allah puts his poverty right before his eyes, and disorganizes his affairs, and the world does not come to him, except what has been decreed for him.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) said: Indeed Allah, Most High said: 'O son of Adam! Devote yourself to My worship, I will fill your chest with riches and alleviate your poverty. And if you do not do so, then I will fill your hands with problems and not alleviate your poverty.'

Aishah said : The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) died and we had a Shatrof barely. We ate from it as Allah willed, then I said to the slave girl: 'Measure it' so she measured it, and it was not long before it was gone. She said: If we had left it alone then we could have eaten from it more than that.

Aishah narrated: We had a cloth which had some pictures on it as a curtain on my door. The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) saw it and said: 'Remove it, for it reminds me of the world.' She said: We had a piece of velvet that had patches of silk on it which we used to wear.
