Ibn Umar narrated: When the Muslims arrived in AI-Madinah, they used to assemble for the Salat, and guess the time for it there was no one who called for it (the prayer). One day they discussed that and some of them said that they should use a bell like the bell the Christians use. Others said they should use a trumpet like the horn the Jews use. But Umar [bin Al-Khattab] said: 'Wouldn't it better if we had a man call for the prayer?' He said: So Allah's Messenger said: 'O Bilal! Stand up and call for the Salat.'

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ النَّضْرِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّضْرِ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنَا نَافِعٌ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ حِينَ قَدِمُوا الْمَدِينَةَ يَجْتَمِعُونَ فَيَتَحَيَّنُونَ الصَّلَوَاتِ وَلَيْسَ يُنَادِي بِهَا أَحَدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتَكَلَّمُوا يَوْمًا فِي ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ:‏‏‏‏ اتَّخِذُوا نَاقُوسًا مِثْلَ نَاقُوسِ النَّصَارَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ:‏‏‏‏ اتَّخِذُوا قَرْنًا مِثْلَ قَرْنِ الْيَهُودِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ:‏‏‏‏ أَوَلَا تَبْعَثُونَ رَجُلًا يُنَادِي بِالصَّلَاةِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا بِلَالُ قُمْ فَنَادِ بِالصَّلَاةِ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مِنْ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ.

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ جس وقت مسلمان مدینہ آئے تو وہ اکٹھے ہو کر اوقات نماز کا اندازہ لگاتے تھے، کوئی نماز کے لیے پکار نہ لگاتا تھا، ایک دن ان لوگوں نے اس سلسلے میں گفتگو کی ۱؎ چنانچہ ان میں سے بعض لوگوں نے کہا: نصاریٰ کے ناقوس کی طرح کوئی ناقوس بنا لو، بعض نے کہا کہ تم یہودیوں کے قرن کی طرح کوئی قرن ( یعنی کسی جانور کا سینگ ) بنا لو۔ ابن عمر رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں: اس پر عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنہ نے کہا: کیا تم کوئی آدمی نہیں بھیج سکتے جو نماز کے لیے پکارے۔ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”بلال اٹھو جاؤ نماز کے لیے پکارو“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- یہ حدیث ابن عمر رضی الله عنہما کی ( اس ) روایت سے حسن صحیح غریب ہے۔ ( جسے بخاری و مسلم اور دیگر محدثین نے روایت کیا ہے ) ۱؎۔

Abu Mahdhurah narrated that : Allah's Messenger sat with him and taught him the Adhan word for word. Ibrahim said, It is the same as our Adhan. Bishr said: So I said to him, 'Repeat it to me.' So he described the Adhan with At-Tarjl'.

Abu Mahdhurah narrated that : the Prophet taught him the Adhan with nineteen phrases, and the Iqamah with seventeen phrases.

Anas bin Malik narrated: Bilal was ordered to make the phrases of the Adhan even, and the phrases of the Iqamah odd.

Abdullah bin Zaid said: Allah's Messenger would say each phrase of the call (for prayer) two times, for the Adhan and the Iqamah.

Jabir [bin Abdullah] narrated: Allah's Messenger said to Bilal: O Bilal! When you call the Adhan then do so deliberately and slowly, and when you call the Iqamah then be quick. Allow enough time between your Adhan and Iqamah for the person eating to finish what he is eating, the person drinking to finish what he is drinking, and the one who needs time to relive himself, and do not stand until you see me.
